Smart glasses have to advertise over Bluetooth Low Energy to stay paired with a phone. That advertisement is public, it is constant while the glasses are worn, and it is the thing Nearby Lens listens for.

Each advertisement is matched against manufacturer IDs, glasses-specific service UUIDs and device-name keywords. Matches add up to a confidence score, and signal strength becomes an estimated distance.

Cross your sensitivity threshold and you get a notification with the brand, the confidence and the distance — on your wrist if you wear an Apple Watch, otherwise on your phone. Duplicate sightings collapse into one live card.
Most detection apps assume you'll be holding your phone. You won't be — not in a meeting, not on a train, not at the gym. Nearby Lens puts the scanner on the one device you are already wearing.

The Watch app uses the Apple Watch's own Bluetooth Low Energy radio. Leave your iPhone at home, go for a run, and detection keeps running on your wrist. Background scanning needs Apple Watch Series 6 or later.
A detection is a tap on the wrist. You don't reach into a pocket, unlock a screen, or make it obvious you're checking something — which is exactly what you want in a room where you'd rather not announce it.
The Watch runs the exact same scoring rules as iPhone and Android, including over-the-air rule updates. A given pair of glasses scores the same on every device you own — no watered-down wrist version.
When your iPhone and Watch are both scanning, they coordinate so a single pair of glasses alerts you once. If either device loses touch with the other, both alert — missing a detection is worse than feeling it twice.
Put scan status on your watch face and start or stop a scan with one tap. On iPhone there's a Home Screen widget and a Control Center toggle that do the same thing.

Every detection gets a percentage, not a verdict. Shared manufacturer IDs are flagged as uncertain instead of being passed off as certain.
Signal strength becomes a live distance estimate that tightens as you move — enough to tell "somewhere in the building" from "at this table".
An Android foreground service survives Doze and app closure; iOS scans within Apple's background limits. Android resumes automatically after a reboot.
Strict, Balanced or Relaxed. Strict raises the confidence and signal floor so only close, high-certainty matches alert you — the setting to use if you see false positives.
Choose 20 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes between repeat alerts for the same device, so one pair of glasses in a long meeting doesn't buzz you forty times.

Trains, buses and airport lounges put you inches from strangers for an hour at a time. A wrist tap tells you there are camera glasses in the carriage without you scanning the seats yourself.

Start a scan and watch the estimated distance on the detection card. Walk slowly. The number falls as you close in and rises as you move away, which is enough to narrow a whole room down to a cushion, a drawer or a jacket pocket. On Apple Watch you can do it with both hands free.
Indoor Bluetooth range is roughly ten metres and drops through walls, so this works within a room or an adjacent one — not across a city. It's a proximity finder, not GPS.
Ordinary reading and prescription glasses have no battery and no radio inside them. There is no signal to detect, so no app — including this one — can find them. Nearby Lens finds eyewear that broadcasts. If yours doesn't, we'd rather tell you now than take your $1.99.
Getting warmer
Estimates from Bluetooth signal strength. Walls, bodies and furniture weaken the signal, so treat the number as "warmer or colder", not a measurement.
Every alternative to Nearby Lens either detects the wrong thing, needs to be attached to the glasses in advance, or depends on you noticing something designed not to be noticed.

An AirTag or Tile only helps with glasses you already own and remembered to tag. It tells you nothing about the pair on the person opposite you — which is the situation people actually want covered.
A general BLE scanner lists every speaker, watch and TV in range as a hex address. Nearby Lens is tuned for one category: it knows which manufacturer IDs and service UUIDs belong to eyewear, scores them, and stays quiet about everything else.
A privacy app that harvested your data would be a contradiction. Nearby Lens is built so there is nothing to hand over, even if someone asked.
No sign-in, no email, no profile. Install the app and start scanning — there is no identity attached to anything you detect.
Bluetooth addresses are one-way hashed before they are used for de-duplication. Raw addresses are never written to storage and never leave the device.
Scanning, scoring and distance estimation all run locally. Your detection history stays on the phone or watch that found it.
